IQOS Versus Vaping
What is IQOS and how does it compare to vaping?
It would be hard to blame you for being skeptical about anything which big tobacco says or does. Let’s face facts here; they don’t have much of proven track record when it comes to being open and transparent in the way they do their business. So, when Phillip Morris comes out and says that it’s released a less toxic cigarette that could save lives and help people quit smoking, you have to take it with a grain of salt. One thing is for sure; it’s not a vaporizer. The only similarity between the IQOS and a vaporizer is that they’re both electronic.
Their latest tobacco product is as close to vaping as they could get, without it being a vaporizer. The IQOS is a tube which you insert a tobacco stick into. It contains a metal filament or rod which is inserted into a tobacco plug and then when you press the firing button it heats the tobacco. There is no flame, like vaping, which Phillip Morris says eliminates up to 90 to 95% of the toxins produced when you light a traditional cigarette.
Vaporizers contain a tank that has a coil or atomizer inside it. The e-liquid in the tank soaks into the cotton wicking surrounding the coil, and when you press the firing button on the e-cigarette or vaporizer, the e-liquid is heated and turned into a vapor. There is no tobacco in e-liquid or e-juice, but many vapers choose to use nicotine when they first quit smoking. After a few months, many vapers transition down from high nicotine e-liquids to low or zero nicotine e-liquids.
In the next few months, the F.D.A is expected to make a decision on whether or not they’ll allow IQOS devices to be sold in America. There is quite a lot of debate about whether the IQOS is helping people quit smoking, or simply swapping one tobacco product with another. “They are masterful liars. That's not an exaggeration - that's a fact proven by decades of evidence,” said Matthew Myers, longtime president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. “So, the question we're all asking ourselves is: What's their ultimate game plan with this thing?”
In recent years, smoking across America has dropped to an all-time low. Phillip Morris has invested over $3 billion so far on developing and marketing the IQOS device and is relying on it to claw back some of the lost revenue from the drop-in cigarette sales. They are hoping that the tobacco component of the IQOS will help people struggling to quit smoking find a better alternative.
Vaping is facing increased scrutiny around the globe because of the lack of long-term studies into its health effects. While some governments are falling on the side of e-cigarettes and can see their potential to help smokers quit smoking, others hesitant about any tobacco products move away from them. It will be interesting to see which way the F.D.A falls on the new IQOS device after their recent move to legislate vaping and e-cigarettes.
